The Pentagon wants public feedback that could help guide the development of policies, initiatives and resource distribution to support the defense industrial base in integrating AI into the systems it produces.

The query is slated to be published Wednesday in the Federal Register.

Responses will also inform a “Trusted AI Defense Industrial Base Roadmap” that officials plan to create, according to an unpublished notice filed Tuesday.

“The DoD Office of Industrial Base Resilience recognizes that the integration of AI into defense systems is pivotal to national security. The DIB is responsible for developing, manufacturing, and maintaining the systems that the U.S. military uses to defend the nation. DoD collaborates with the DIB to rapidly adopt AI for defense applications and maintain the nation’s tactical advantage,” the unpublished notice states. “The Department recognizes the importance of investing in the DIB’s ability to incorporate AI into the design, development, operations, maintenance, and support of defense systems.”

The document includes more than a dozen questions related to infrastructure and supply chain resilience, workforce, innovation, acquisition, policy and regulatory environment.

Respondents will have 60 days from the date of publication to provide input.

The outreach comes as the Pentagon is looking to integrate AI capabilities across the department to support a wide range of activities, from back-office functions to warfighting at the tactical edge.
