The Defense Department announced Monday that it will incorporate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into the military’s generative AI platform that’s already being used by more than a million personnel.

ChatGPT has been wildly popular in the commercial sector since it was widely released in 2022. Now the Pentagon plans to add the tech to its GenAI.mil system, which DOD leadership — including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — have been pushing hard for the department’s employees to use since it was launched in December.

The Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Marine Corps have already adopted the system as their preferred generative AI platform.

Google’s Gemini products were the first tools to be integrated into GenAI.mil.

Pentagon leaders previously announced that Grok large language models from xAI, led by Elon Musk, would be included in “early 2026.”

On Monday, the DOD announced that ChatGPT will be brought into the system, although the announcement did not provide a time frame for when it will be available.

“This partnership will make OpenAI’s advanced large language models readily available to all 3 million Department personnel. ChatGPT will be made available to enhance mission execution and readiness, delivering reliable capabilities to the joint force,” according to a press release. “Integrating ChatGPT into GenAI.mil marks another critical step in making frontier AI capabilities the standard for daily operations.”

The Pentagon last year awarded $200 million contracts to OpenAI, xAI, Google and Anthropic for “frontier AI” projects.

Generative AI tech uses models to produce things like code, text, images and audio that are that based on user prompts. However, the outputs aren’t always factually accurate.

The DOD press release on Monday did not address any specific security concerns related to military adoption of ChatGPT, such as data leakage, or the risk of factual inaccuracies.

Officials wrote that the Pentagon is “building an AI ecosystem for speed, security, and enduring mission impact.”

Top-priority AI use cases for DOD are associated with organizational, intelligence and warfighting activities.

Shortly after GenAI.mil was launched, DefenseScoop reported that users had mixed reactions.

More than a million unique users have tried out GenAI.mil, according to the Pentagon, but the department is looking to proliferate it further.

“The platform’s adoption is already accelerating operational tempo and sharpening the decision superiority of its users. To ensure this advantage extends to the entire joint force, comprehensive training for all Department personnel will continue, empowering them to effectively learn the platform and integrate AI capabilities into their daily workflows,” officials wrote in the press release.
