Pentagon announces Trump nominee to lead U.S. Army Europe and Africa
President Donald Trump has nominated Lt. Gen. Kevin Admiral to lead U.S. Army Europe and Africa as its next commander, the Pentagon announced Thursday.
If confirmed, he would also serve as commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command.
The general has been tapped as the permanent replacement for Gen. Christopher Donahue, who departed his role as head of USAREUR-AF a few weeks ago and was reportedly forced out by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie has been serving as acting commander since Donahue’s exit.
Admiral would remain a three-star if lawmakers approve him for the top Army role in Europe and Africa. It was previously a four-star position.
He is currently the commanding general of III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, Texas. His other general officer assignments have included service as commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division and director of force management in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, according to his official Army bio.
USAREUR-AF, headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, provides land forces for American military operations in Europe and Africa, multinational training and security cooperation. More than 100 countries are in its area of responsibility, according to the command. One of its subordinate commands, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, has been involved in the Iran war and recently suffered casualties in the conflict during an Iranian attack on a facility in Jordan.
USAREUR-AF has supported military innovation initiatives such as Flytrap — a counter-drone and technology experimentation effort — and NATO’s Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative.
A key aim of EFDI is to “defeat adversary mass and momentum with low cost, attritable uncrewed systems, AI-enabled targeting, and layered defenses” backed by an integrated mission command network that uses live data to enhance decision-making, according to a USAREUR-AF description of the initiative.
