Leonel Garciga tapped as next Army CIO
Leonel Garciga has been selected as the next chief information officer for the Army, according to an announcement obtained by DefenseScoop.
Garciga is currently the director of information management within the deputy chief of staff, G2, which is the Army’s main intelligence office.
The Army’s CIO position has been vacant since Raj Iyer left in the winter following the conclusion of his three-year term. David Markowitz, the Army’s chief data officer, has been serving as the acting CIO since Iyer left.
Iyer was the Army’s first civilian CIO after the service decided to split that office into two functions: CIO and G6. Prior to the split, a single general office led both. Now the G6 position is led by a three-star general.
Garciga will take point on the Army’s first digital transformation strategy unveiled by Iyer in 2021 aimed to modernize the service by updating its infrastructure and harnessing best practices from the commercial sector.
It is unclear when Garciga will assume the role.
